ACTIVITY LEVEL
Moderately strenuous to strenuous. This is an active river adventure, not a resort vacation. Participants should be comfortable getting on and off a raft, walking on sand and uneven terrain, carrying up to 25 pounds of personal gear, and hiking up to approximately three miles round-trip on rocky, sandy, and sometimes steep trails. Some hikes involve scrambling over rocks, steep stair-step trails, and possible exposure to heights. All hikes and side outings are optional, and participants can choose to remain closer to the raft when conditions or personal comfort warrant. No previous whitewater or swimming experience is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Per our outfitter:

“We are happy to accommodate a wide range of physical challenges and medical conditions. Neither previous whitewater experience nor swimming ability is required. Being in good physical condition will enhance your enjoyment of the trip. Here are some minimum requirements you must be able to meet to safely enjoy your journey:

  • Ability to hold onto the raft while going through whitewater. Ropes are provided throughout the raft for hand holds.

  • Capable of climbing onto and off of the raft. There will be about a 2-3-foot step up/down from the raft to the beaches. Please note that some surfaces may be wet and slippery.

  • Comfortable walking on uneven terrain. Trails in Grand Canyon are not regularly maintained. Also sand beaches are the norm for camp sites so make sure you are comfortable walking [up and] across the sandy inclines.

  • Able to carry your own personal gear to and from camp. The maximum weight for personal gear is 25 pounds.”

Grand Canyon trails are not regularly maintained, and camps are generally on sandy beaches or rocky terrain. Being in good physical condition will enhance your enjoyment of the trip.

If you have mobility limitations or other physical considerations, please contact me before registering so we can discuss whether this particular trip is appropriate for you.

TRIP DESCRIPTION

Join professional outdoor photographer and instructor Colleen Miniuk for an eight-day, seven-night journey through Grand Canyon on the Colorado River—and experience the canyon in a completely different season.

This will be my 12th Grand Canyon river trip and my 10th photography-based charter, and it marks the 10th anniversary of Sheography, which was born on this very river in 2017. After years of traveling the canyon in August, we're heading downriver in May to see what a new season has to offer.

THIS IS MORE THAN A PHOTOGRAPHY TRIP!
It also more than just a sightseeing trip. This isn't a traditional photography workshop with classroom sessions and a prescribed shot list. It's eight days of immersing yourself and living in the Grand Canyon—and your camera is coming along for the ride to help you tell your story.

We'll travel 188 miles from Lee's Ferry to Whitmore Wash aboard our own 35-foot motorized boat with Hatch River Expeditions, exploring the river corridor by boat and on foot. Along the way, we'll encounter towering cliffs, ancient ruins, side canyons, waterfalls, spring wildflowers, beaches and rock ledges, changing light, and exhilarating whitewater.

We'll photograph, of course. But we'll also hike, swim when conditions allow, watch the canyon change with the light, share meals, stargaze in camp, tell stories, and more. Because that's part of what makes this river trip so special: the photographs are only one part of the experience.

BUT YOU’LL MAKE AMAZING PHOTOGRAPHS!
Throughout the trip, I'll help you respond creatively to whatever the river gives us. Rather than chasing a predetermined collection of iconic images, we'll explore how to:

  • Balance quick, intuitive “grab-and-go” photography from the moving raft with slower, more contemplative work from shore

  • Recognize and respond to changing light, including both shadow and highlight

  • Compose for scale, balance, movement, and visual impact

  • Find compelling photographs in both grand landscapes and intimate details

  • Build a visual story through individual images and sequences

  • Make creative choices that reflect YOUR way of seeing

There are no indoor classrooms on the river, and there won't be formal image-review sessions during the trip. Instead, photography instruction happens naturally—as opportunities arise on the raft, along the trail, around camp, and whenever someone has a question or wants to experiment.

All camera types are welcome, including DSLR, mirrorless, iPhone, and GoPro.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
We'll work closely with our Hatch boatmen to make the most of the conditions and seek out classic and lesser-known photographic opportunities when circumstances allow. But weather, river conditions, timing, group logistics, and other variables mean we cannot guarantee stops at specific locations or hikes. One of the greatest gifts of a river trip is that the River is in charge.

**IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have expectations that we'll be "nailing" iconic locations like Nankoweap, Little Colorado River, Elves Chasm, Deer Creek Falls, etc. in "perfect" lighting conditions, this is not the trip for you. While I work closely with our boatmen to arrange visits at classic and lesser-known photogenic locations in the best light possible, our 8-day itinerary will simply not enable us to see it all at its best (we'd need years and years for that...). Due to a multitude of variables outside our control, we cannot guarantee stops at any specific location or hikes during this trip. Besides, I philosophically believe making creative, storytelling, and meaningful images comes from within and incorporates, but does not depend, on external factors like location, weather, seasons, etc. A great photographer can make the most in every lighting situation and in any location, not just the iconic ones...and that's exactly what we'll be learning how to do--and doing--on this trip! And because of this spontaneity, each photography retreat is different from year to year!*

I believe meaningful photography comes from within. Location, weather, season, and light all influence what we can make, but none of them determines whether a photograph can be meaningful. The goal isn't to come home with the same photographs everyone else has made. It's to come home having seen the canyon—and yourself—more deeply.

And because every river trip unfolds differently, no two Grand Canyon photography charters are ever quite the same.

LIFE ON THE RIVER
We'll begin preparing together before we ever reach the water with an online pre-trip orientation on April 11, 2027. We'll talk through what life on the river will be like, cover logistics and answer questions, and begin preparing photographically for the journey.

Before we launch, we'll gather at Cliff Dwellers Lodge on May 5 for a casual group dinner. On May 6, we'll pack our photography and personal gear into dry bags provided by Hatch, travel to Lee's Ferry, and launch onto the Colorado River.

For the next eight days, the river becomes our home. Our camps will change every night, from sandy beaches to rock ledges tucked against the canyon walls. Everyone pitches in to unload and load the boat, set up tents and cots, and help with kitchen chores. No previous camping experience is required—we'll help you get settled. Cooperation isn't just part of river life; it's what makes an experience like this possible. We're a small community living and traveling together in a remote environment, and everyone contributes.

And then there's the food! Hatch's river kitchen serves up surprisingly wonderful meals in the middle of the wilderness—from made-to-order breakfasts to hearty dinners, rib-eye steaks, burritos, homemade mashed potatoes, and legendary desserts. Special dietary needs can often be accommodated with advance notice.

On May 13, we'll leave the river by helicopter from Bar 10 Ranch, then board a small plane back to Marble Canyon, arriving in late morning. Participants will also have the option of flying directly from Bar 10 Ranch to Las Vegas should they prefer.

Then comes the strange part: going home and facing “Reentry Rapid.” After eight days immersed in the canyon, surrounded by river, rock, stars, stories, and a small community of fellow adventurers, ordinary life can feel a little different…

This is a GRAND adventure. Eight days of with the real world and away from the manufactured world. A breath of fresh air. A creative reset. A chance to experience one of the world's extraordinary landscapes from the inside rather than from a viewpoint.

And for me, there's something especially meaningful about returning to the river where Sheography began ten years ago for my 10th photography charter.

The River calls!

TESTIMONIAL FROM PAST ATTENDEES

“Even though I had rafted the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon three times before, the opportunity to go with Colleen on her photography retreat, prompted me to go a fourth time. I am so very happy I made that decision. It was my best trip EVER down the river!! Colleen and Hatch River Expeditions did an excellent job of planning every last detail, as well as assuring the group had an amazing and safe adventure. The Grand Canyon is a tough subject to photograph well, but Colleen was right there to provide suggestions and feedback. I captured some amazing images, met a great group of people (called Hatchlings), had the adventure of a lifetime, and may have to go with Colleen again!!” ~Judy G. (2023)

“The trip allowed me to experience the Grand Canyon in a way that I have not seen before. Laying out under the stars at night was a first and very calming experience. Some of my learnings included how to look at landscape and the geology in a different way to be a more creative photographer. “ ~Anonymous (2024)

“I loved the remote travel into the Grand Canyon via raft. I learned a lot from all the photography tips and sessions.” ~Toni F. (2023)”

“For someone who had never camped before, this felt a bit like diving into the deep end, but I discovered I loved sleeping under the stars and 'living' on the bank of the river. The scenery was spectacular, the sounds of the rapids at night, and the wildlife sightings made this trip great for me.” ~Jane S. (2024)

"My wife and I had a great time on the 8-day Grand Canyon rafting trip with Colleen. I got to experiment with "new-for-me" photography techniques such as HDR, shooting the Milky Way, long exposure photos of waterfalls and rapids, and using a new GoPro to video the rapids. The sights, food, campsites, guides, and photo instruction were all excellent. Hatch is the best! Colleen rocks!" ~Larry K. (2019)

"Epic experience. Colleen and the Hatch guides (Lars and Zach) helped make the experience one to remember. My photography skills improved tremendously due to Colleen's guided approach to capturing the beauty. I highly recommend a rafting retreat." ~ Naomi F. (2017)

"What's great about this rafting retreat is everyone is a photographer. You don't have to worry about being pressured by others to hurry up already with getting your photos. Everything is taken care of for you, what more can you ask for!"~ Angela R. (2017)

“There’s nothing like cowboy camping under the stars at the rivers edge deep in the Grand Canyon.” ~Sue P. (2024)

"The canyon was sublime, the people became family and Colleen led us with skill and humor. The trip of a life-time." ~ Bob T. (2018)

"There are two overwhelmingly motivators for this trip; (1) the beauty of the Grand Canyon and (2) the knowledge and personality of the leader-Colleen."~ Ellen C. (2018)

"The Colorado River Rafting Workshop with Colleen and Hatch is an exhilarating, life-altering opportunity to photograph one of the most challenging landscapes in the world. The challenge, for me, is how to balance the grandeur of size with the moments of canyon intimacy, the harshness of ancient rock with the softness of sand, the unrelenting aggression of a wave slapping your face with the tranquil lull of sun-kissed water. I guess I’ll have to go again. And again." ~ Mary G. (2019)

"An adventure of a lifetime...the vistas and opportunities are endless. Love Colleen's "teaching / mentoring" style -- she encourages me to go out of my photographic comfort zone."~ Mary G. (2017 and 2018)

"My wife went the year before and talked about it incessantly. Turns out she was right in every respect. A great photographic adventure!!" ~ Mike S. (2018)

"Everyone should have a float trip through the Grand Canyon on their "bucket list" and Colleen's photography workshop is a great way to do it." ~Byron C. (2019)

"Only 27,000 people a year get to see eternity--and I urge you to be one of them."~ Paul S. (2018)
